"Sorry, but it's probably the easiest choice at the moment. My house is even further away than the border, and who knows how long we'll have to wait for a train?" He walked on, glancing over his shoulder. "And at least try to refrain from eating everything on the way there, or you won't have anything left for later."

"Pshaw!" America flapped his hand, "I don't plan on eatin' the cake."

"I would hope not," said Germany, eyeing America warily. "Anyway, we should get going if we want to make it there anytime soon." He began walking again.

America followed, "So have you been, Deutschland?" he said, completely ruining the name with his accent.

"Pretty good, Amerika," he said, amused by the other's attempt at German. "Not in a recession anymore, the economy's growing at the fastest rate it's ever been since reunification... but I hear you're not doing all that well, ja?"

"No," he hung his head, "But we're trying!" he pumped his fist, "For the first time ever there's a split Congress. The House is Republican and the Senate is Democratic so we dunno if everything's just gunna get worse or better because they'll just be arguing all the time!"

"Ah, I see," said Germany, walking alongside him. "Good luck with that. Perhaps they'll at least try to understand each other," he mused, being jerked forward by one of his dogs before regaining his balance.

America snorted, "Doubt it. The partied haven't gotten along since like... Never."

"Believe me, I get it. I have competing political parties as well..." he trailed off, his mind wandering back to his own situation. "Anyway, the only thing to do now is hope, ja?"

America looked at him and nodded, "Heros always hope Germany!" he smacked his back.

Germany winced as the abnormally strong nation's hand made contact with his back. "J-ja...." he straightened up and continued walking. "...How exactly is it possible for you to be that strong with such an normal-looking frame?"

America looked at him and blinked a few times, "Whadya mean?" he asked, completely unaware of his superhuman strength.

Germany sighed. "Never mind." He walked on, some semblance of his earlier peacefulness returning to him as he attempted the deep-breathing exercises his therapist recommended for anger management.

America looked around, "Weird ta think I used to bomb cities like this. Just completely carpet bomb it: whoosh, gone." he nodded, looking at all the building and stuff. He was unaware of Germany's current attempts at restoring inner peace.

Germany stared at America, one eyebrow suddenly developing a slight twitch. "America... forgive my bluntness, but have you no ability to read the atmosphere whatsoever? You just don't say those kinds of things," he tried to explain, a vein throbbing in his forehead as he remembered the war.
